Asteya: The Art of Non-Stealing
How It Transforms Daily Life And What This Has to Do with Your Wellness Journey
Ever feel like you’re constantly chasing the next big thing? Another goal, another purchase, another wellness trend? It’s easy to get caught in this cycle, but here’s the truth: fulfilment doesn’t come from accumulating more—it comes from appreciating what’s already within you.
Enter Asteya, one of the core Yamas in the Eight Limbs of Yoga, often translated as non-stealing. But before you think, “I’m good, I don’t steal!”—let’s dive a little deeper. Asteya isn’t just about material possessions; it’s about how we show up for ourselves and others. It’s about time, energy, and the way we either honour or take away from our own well-being.
This concept aligns so deeply with the work I do in my Intentional Living Formula—helping busy, wellness-curious souls like you create a sustainable, balanced life rooted in mindfulness, self-awareness, and intention.
So, how does Asteya play out in your everyday life? And how can embracing this practice help you feel more aligned, present, and fulfilled? Let’s explore.
The Hidden Ways We “Steal” from Ourselves
We don’t have to physically take something to engage in stealing. Sometimes, we take away from our own experience, presence, and self-worth without even realising it.
1. Stealing Time (From Ourselves & Others)
Ever find yourself constantly rushing, running late, or overscheduling? Time is one of our most valuable resources, and when we’re always in a state of hurry, we steal from ourselves the opportunity to be fully present.
Likewise, when we don’t respect other people’s time—cancelling last-minute, overextending commitments, or showing up distracted—we take away their ability to be fully engaged too.
➡ Practice Instead: Protect your time. Set boundaries. Show up on time for yourself and others. And most importantly, slow down enough to actually experience the moment.
2. Stealing from Our Own Worth (Through Comparison & Self-Doubt)
How often do you compare yourself to someone else’s wellness journey? The person who seems to have it all figured out, the one hitting every goal, the one who makes everything look effortless?
Comparison steals your joy and prevents you from embracing your unique path. It creates self-doubt, making you feel like what you’re doing isn’t “enough.”
➡ Practice Instead: Catch yourself in those moments of comparison. Instead of focusing on what you think you lack, shift your attention to your own progress. Celebrate your small wins. Own your journey.
3. Stealing Joy by Seeking External Validation
Let’s talk about the endless cycle of wanting more—more material things, more achievements, more approval from others. The modern world is designed to keep us feeling like we’re always missing something.
But the more we chase, the more we steal from our own ability to be content right here, right now.
➡ Practice Instead: Cultivate contentment. Try gratitude journaling, limit social media consumption, and focus on experiences rather than things. Remember: you already have everything you need within you.
How to Bring Asteya Into Your Daily Life
The beauty of Asteya is that it doesn’t just apply to yoga—it’s a philosophy you can live by. Here are a few ways to embody non-stealing in your everyday life:
Respect Your Energy – Say no when needed, rest when your body asks for it, and protect your mental and emotional space. You don’t have to be everything for everyone.
Practice Mindful Consumption – Before making a purchase, ask yourself: Do I actually need this, or am I filling a temporary void?
Be Fully Present – Whether it’s a conversation, a meal, or a yoga practice, show up fully. Stealing attention from the present moment takes away from the richness of your experience.
The Bigger Picture: Abundance & Gratitude
At the heart of Asteya is trust—trust that you are enough, that you have enough, and that there is enough for everyone. This mindset shift is life-changing.
Instead of acting from a place of scarcity and lack, you begin to move with abundance and appreciation. You let go of comparison, slow down, and find peace in where you are today.
And if this practice resonates with you, it’s exactly the kind of intentional wellness approach I bring into my coaching.
